description: "Black Hawk Vi", 78 Feet In Lenth And 17 Feet Wide Yacht, Seen At Alexander Docks, Winnipeg. The "Black Hawk Vi" Is Owned By Dr. Irwin Olafson Of Selkirk, Mb. This Vessel Built In Buffalo, Ny, Was Put Into Freighter Service On The Great Lakes In 1896. Called The "Alert" She Sailed Under The American Registry Until 1916 When She Was Transferred To British Registry Sailing Out Of Southampton,On. In 1944 She Began Her Life As A Tug At Port Arthur. In 1951 The "Alert" Was Transported Overland To The Red River And Was Renamed The "Douglas M". She Was Used As A Lake Freighter By The Northern Lakes Fisheries Company Ltd Until 1971. Then With Fishing Economics Forcing Her Out Of The Fishing Business, The "Douglas M" After Working On Most Of Canada'S Biggest Lakes Was Converted To Pleasure Cruising And Renamed "Black Hawk Vi". The Name Was Chosen By A Previous Owner Who Was A Fan Of The Chicago Black Hawks. The Present Owner Olafson Acquired The Vesel In January 1978 And She Was Entered Under British Registry With Her Home Port At Winnipeg. The "Black Hawk Vi" Has An All Steel Hull And Is 123 Gross Tons
